How to Play FreeCell Solitaire
FreeCell starts with all 52 cards face up across eight tableau columns. Four free cells sit above the tableau and can each hold one card as temporary storage. Because every card is visible, the main challenge is planning the order of moves instead of waiting for hidden cards to turn over.
FreeCell Rules
Build tableau columns in descending rank with alternating colors: a black 7 can go on a red 8, and a red 6 can go on a black 7. You can move a single card, or a valid descending alternating sequence when enough free cells or empty tableau columns are available. Any card can move to an empty tableau column. Foundations start with aces and build upward by suit.
Using Free Cells
Move only one card into each free cell. Keep free cells open when possible, because empty free cells and empty tableau columns determine how long a sequence can be moved.
Goal
Move every card to the four foundations from ace to king. Completed FreeCell rounds can be saved locally with time and move count.
FreeCell Tips
FreeCell gives you full information, so the best moves usually keep future movement space open.
Keep free cells open
A full free-cell row quickly limits the board. Use free cells to unlock a specific card, then move those cards back to the tableau or foundations as soon as practical.
Create empty columns
Empty tableau columns increase how many cards can move together. They are often more useful than a free cell because they can hold a longer working sequence.
Plan around low cards
Look for buried aces and twos early. Opening them gives the foundations a start and can clear small cards that otherwise block longer tableau runs.
